Staff and students celebrate Ofsted success!

Mon 21 Nov 2011

In the middle of October, a team of Ofsted inspectors visited Wilberforce Sixth Form College to determine how well the college was serving local community. In their report, published today, the inspectors draw particular attention to the quality of guidance and support offered to students, which it refers to as ‘outstanding’. The team of eight inspectors gave the College nine ‘outstanding’ and ten ‘good’ and one ‘satisfactory’ grade, stating that overall “Wilberforce is a good college”.

Principal, Dr Stephan Jungnitz, is thrilled. “We pride ourselves on the quality of the study support we offer to all our students, and, as the top state college in the area in terms of progress, we are delighted this has been recognised by the inspection team. They confirmed that all students are making good progress, with some making exceptional progress, which is something we are really proud of”.

However, it wasn’t just the support offered to students which was highly rated by Ofsted, as inspectors also drew attention to the “imaginative and challenging teaching” which means that “students enjoy learning”. They went on to say that at Wilberforce Sixth Form College, “the career aspirations and life chances of students are significantly improved”, drawing on the increasing numbers of students progressing onto higher education.

The students had their say too, delivering their own verdict to the inspectors during the inspection, with “subject teachers who go the extra mile to help” and “feeling valued as individuals” featuring as key attributes of Wilberforce College. “This is the third time that Ofsted have visited whilst I have been Principal”, explains Stephan Jungnitz, “In each of the reports they have said that the College is a ‘good college’. We know that it gets harder every inspection to get this sort of result from Ofsted, so I am delighted for all the students, staff and governors that all their hard work and success have won lavish praise from Ofsted”. The report is available in full here.
