Student Services

The provision of high quality support for students is central to the achievement of the College's mission – raising the aspirations and achievements of those students who join us.

Student Services is located in a brand new purpose built Student Centre.  It is essentially a 'one stop shop' for students and parents.  There is a staffed reception desk for students and a range of staff performing administrative roles that directly support student achievement.

A major function of Student Services is the administration of financial assistance and awards, including Education Maintenance Allowance. Student Services Managers are located within Student Services to provide individual guidance for students and provide further support through working with external agencies, including Connexions advisers.

The Reception desk deals with a range of queries from students, staff and parents.  These include issues concerning timetables, attendance records, College bus services and financial assistance.

Student Services also deal with:

  • The administration of student applications, interviews and admissions
  • Student references, particularly for Higher Education and employment
  • The management of student examination results
  • Support for Open Evenings and Consultation Evenings
  • Administration of student transport
  • Supporting the work of the personal tutor team
  • The maintenance of student records
  • Directing students to individual counselling where requested

Student Services is part of a broader student support function that includes additional learning support, library services, careers guidance (Connexions), and community activities.  The breadth of the team and the varied nature of the role place an emphasis upon flexibility and the ability to work as part of a team to support all students with sensitivity and discretion.

The Study Centre

The Individual Support

We believe you will get the most out of your studies if you are given personal guidance throughout your course.

If you study with us full-time you will have your own Personal Tutor who will meet with you regularly to help you co-ordinate your work and resolve any difficulties as they arise. This gives you the chance to discuss your progress in confidence. Your Tutor can also advise you on issues such as careers, finances, continuing in Further Education, or applying for jobs or University places.

Study Centre

The Study Centre is a valuable resource to all students as a quiet working area. It is also where the Study Support Team is based. The Support Team helps students in a variety of ways; individual sessions, small group work and support in the classroom. Study support is received by all abilities within College for basic skills, essay writing planning and other skills needed to achieve the best examination and course results.

Fourteen computers are available to students working within the Study Centre and there is a large bank of resources to cover every study need. Annually the Centre's staff helps over a hundred students at all course levels.

Counselling Service

What is Counselling?

We all have to cope with problems and difficulties in our lives - sometimes we manage on our own, at others we need some help, support or just someone to listen to us......

The Counsellor will give you the ‘time out’ and space you need to explore your problems in a safe and confidential environment, supporting you while you work through them. If you wish you can be given details of specialist help or be referred to outside agencies.

What sort of issues can I bring?

ANYTHING which is troubling you and preventing you from getting the most out of life while you are at college. Counselling may be helpful if:

  • you need to make an important decision
  • you are struggling with college work
  • you have a crisis at home or with a relationship
  • you have suffered a bereavement or loss
  • you are worried about the use of drugs or alcohol
  • you have problems in your social life
  • you feel anxious or depressed

How do I get Counselling?

Times of counselling sessions are displayed around college and on the door of H7.

To make an appointment:

There are 2 qualified counsellors on the team: Alison Moore and Anita Newberry. You can contact either of them directly, leave a note or ask a tutor/teacher to refer you, or get a form from Student Services.

You can also email - student.counsellor@wilberforce.ac.uk

What happens next?

You will be given an initial session to explore your problem. You can then decide whether further sessions would be useful.
