Students will spend a significant amount of time at college undertaking activities to help them prepare for the next stage of their life, whether that is employment or higher education. Our careers service is headed by an experienced and professionally qualified careers guidance practitioner with many years spent providing careers advice and guidance to college students. Students can make individual careers guidance appointments throughout the college term and can meet with the careers service as often as they like, which means that support is available to students at times when they need it.
Preparation starts in Year 12, with group tutorial work to introduce them to Higher Education – what it is and what sorts of courses they can do there. As part of the tutorial programme in June and July students participate in a comprehensive programme to ensure they have the skills and information to make successful applications in Higher Education. This includes presentations by universities which we have very strong links with, including the University of Hull, Lincoln University, the University of York and Leeds Trinity University covering topics such as “Why HE”, “ Student Life”, “ How to write your Personal Statement” and “ University Finance”. There are also trips organised to universities throughout the year.
Students are given the opportunity to do online course choice questionnaires to help with their decision making and also register early on to the UCAS “Apply” system so that they can manage their applications early. Students also visit the University of Hull for the UCAS Conference and have the opporuntity to take part in a “ UNivdersity Preparation Day” . There is an annual Careers Fair with representatives from universities and employers.
There are additional programmes to support students applying to universities that have competitive admissions, for example Oxford and Cambridge, plus medicine and veterinary science. Students are given additional support including interview preparation from experienced staff who have been successfully supporting students gain places at the top universities for many years. Take a look at our career programmes guide for more information on the support we offer to all our students.
